PUBLIQuartet: National Sawdust

As one of National Sawdust’s 2018-2019 Artists-in-Residence, PUBLIQuartet are advancing their work to commission and present composers outside of the standard classical canon. For their first show this season, the dynamic, groundbreaking PUBLIQuartet teams up with percussion stars Andy Akiho and Ian Rosenbaum for a concert of Akiho’s vibrant, viscerally driving music.

Their first show presents Andy Akiho, one of the most “vital” composers (New York Times) composing today. His virtuosic use of elaborate rhythms and unexpected timbres mesmerizes and moves in equal measure.

With Akiho’s frequent collaborator Ian Rosenbaum — a “meteoric young talent” in the percussion world (Washington Post) — on marimba, this concert promises to be a rollicking tour–de–force performance of Akiho’s String QuartetLIgNEouS, and Karakurenai.

PUBLIQuartet: National Gallery of Art

Celebrating Rachel Whiteread

Applauded by the Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music,” and by the New Yorker as “independent-minded,” PUBLIQuartet’s genre-bending programs span the classical canon and also feature open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet. This program features three original works from the quartet’s MIND|THE|GAP initiative—developed to generate interest in new music and keep traditional classical music relevant to modern audiences—as well as composer Andy Akiho’s LIgNEouS for string quartet and marimba, featuring percussionist Ian Rosenbaum, for whom the piece was written.

PUBLIQuartet: Night of Terror

So excited to announce the first #PUBLIQAccess World Premiere of the season will be held at the historical Workhouse Arts Center in partnership with Turning Point Suffragist Memorial on Sunday, November 12 in Lorton, Virginia!

Steven Snowden's commission, "Silent Sentinels" for string quartet and electronics, honors the Centennial of the "Night of Terror" when 33 Suffragists called the Silent Sentinels were arrested and brutally beaten at the Occoquan Workhouse (now the Workhouse Arts Center). These women were subsequently tortured and endured horrific treatment as prisoners. It wasn't until 1920 that the 19th Amendment was ratified.

PQ's program "Voices of Change" will provide a snapshot of music in 1917, celebrating the Centennial of Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and the music of Lilli Boulanger.

Scheherezade Project

A Multimedia Song Cycle by HOLLANDS, PUBLIQuartet and Amy Khoshbin

Buy Tickets

The Scheherazade Project (TSP) takes its inspiration from the feminist icon Scheherazade, who uses well-known tales to suit her needs, saving her own life as well as the lives of thousands of women from a virgin-killing king in the classical Persian story One Thousand and One Nights. Reimagined through a contemporary western "lens", (TSP) conceives a disillusioned dictator wooed by media stories, slowly immersed into the realm of the screen where "reality" and "fiction" become indiscernible.  Indie-rock duo HOLLANDS and string quartet PUBLIQuartet integrate rock ‘n’ roll and classical music, merging electronic and acoustic genres via original song and improvisations that pay homage to Rimsky- Korsakov's symphonic poem Scheherazade. Set alongside live storytelling and multi-channel video projections by Iranian-American artist Amy Khoshbin, (TSP) was commissioned by a 2015 Mpower Grant awarded by the Sphinx Organization and Music Assistance Fund. (MAF)

Curated and Co-presented by The New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival and National Sawdust as part of the New York Philharmonic's Biennial Celebration.
