“If you and your friend(s) are in the same field and you can collaborate or help each other, do this without shame. It’s not your fault your friends are awesome.” (Roxane Gay, Bad Feminist)

Amanda + Ashley is a commissioning and performance project in which a newly-created body of work for cello and harp explores the subtle intricacies of our friendship. While we will continue the much-needed activist work in the other facets of our careers, this project reflects how as friends, we need each other’s support in addressing such issues as misogyny and racism in contemporary culture. As black female composer Margaret Bonds stated, “Music has to be human. It should move them spiritually and intellectually.” It should be noted that currently, there is a substantial lack of repertoire for this ensemble, especially in which the two instruments are treated as equal partners in the exchange of musical material.
